While Everyone Watches Trump's Tariffs, Citi Just Revealed It Wants Crypto Law Passed Now

One of the most powerful banks on earth is publicly lobbying for crypto legislation, and most of the market hasn't noticed.

Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser confirmed this week that the bank wants a 'good bill to go through' on the Crypto Clarity Act, the landmark legislation that would finally draw a legal line between crypto assets classified as commodities and those treated as securities. Fraser didn't just offer polite support either. She called Citi a 'leader in digital assets' and said the bank specifically wants 'safe adoption' of the technology built into law.

That language matters. Banks don't use phrases like 'leader in digital assets' by accident. That's a positioning statement. Citi is telling Washington, and the market, that it intends to be a major player in crypto infrastructure once regulatory ground rules are set.

Why the Crypto Clarity Act Is a Bigger Deal Than It's Getting Credit For

The bill has been grinding through Congress with minimal mainstream attention, overshadowed by macro noise and tariff headlines. But what it would actually do is enormous. A clear regulatory framework would remove the single biggest barrier keeping institutional capital on the sidelines: legal uncertainty.

Right now, compliance teams at major financial institutions cannot greenlight large-scale crypto product launches because they cannot definitively answer whether a given token is a security. The Crypto Clarity Act would change that. And Citi just signaled it is ready to move the moment it does.

Fraser noted that improvements still need to be made to the current draft, which tells you Citi's legal and lobbying teams are already working the bill from the inside. This isn't passive support. It's active shaping of legislation that will govern hundreds of billions in potential institutional flows.

What Lawmakers Are Actually Working With

Congressional leaders were already pushing for a vote on the bill, and having a major Wall Street CEO publicly back it adds significant political cover. Crypto-friendly legislation becomes much harder to stall when the CEO of a global bank with over $2 trillion in assets is calling for it publicly.

The timing is not random. With spot Bitcoin ETFs now mainstream and tokenization of real-world assets accelerating, banks need the legal framework to compete. Citi knows what's coming and it wants the rules written before the race fully starts.

What to Watch

Monitor the Crypto Clarity Act's progress closely over the next 60 days. Any committee vote or floor scheduling news will move markets fast. Tokens tied to compliant, institutional-grade infrastructure, think custody, settlement, and tokenization plays, could see significant repricing the moment the bill advances. This is the regulatory catalyst the cycle has been waiting for.
