Argentine bank customers can now convert their deposits into a USD stablecoin and spend it anywhere Visa is accepted — and almost nobody is talking about it.

Coinbase and Gennius have quietly launched an Argentina-first initiative that lets eligible bank customers convert local deposits into ONED USD, a stablecoin designed for round-the-clock transfers and everyday spending. No waiting for banking hours. No wire delays. Just dollars, on-chain, through a card already in hundreds of millions of wallets worldwide.

Why Argentina First

This is not a random market pick. Argentina has been running a years-long crash course in currency instability. Inflation has repeatedly wiped out savings held in pesos, and access to actual US dollars has been heavily restricted by government capital controls. Argentines have not been dabbling in stablecoins out of curiosity. They have been using them to survive financially.

That context makes this partnership hit differently. Coinbase is not testing a product in a stable, crypto-friendly market. It is deploying real infrastructure where the demand is already desperate and proven.

What ONED Actually Does

The ONED USD stablecoin sits at the center of this. Customers convert eligible bank deposits into ONED, gaining the ability to transfer value around the clock without touching the traditional banking settlement grid. The Visa integration is the critical layer on top, because it means this is not a closed crypto ecosystem. Holders can spend directly in the real world without an extra conversion step at point of sale.

Gennius brings the local banking rails. Coinbase brings the compliance infrastructure and the global brand that regulators are increasingly comfortable engaging with. Together they are building a corridor that could scale fast.

The Bigger Play

Argentina is the pilot, but Latin America is the target. The region has over 650 million people, chronically underdeveloped banking access, and a population already primed to adopt dollar-denominated alternatives to local currencies. If ONED gains traction in Argentina, the playbook gets copied into Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and beyond.

This also signals something important about Coinbase's strategy heading into 2025. While competitors debate Bitcoin ETF flows and institutional custody, Coinbase is planting flags in emerging markets and building stablecoin infrastructure that could generate fee revenue at massive scale, independent of crypto price cycles.

What to Watch

Track ONED adoption volume and whether Gennius announces additional banking partners in Argentina or neighboring countries in the next 90 days. If this scales, expect other major exchanges to accelerate their own Latin American stablecoin plays. Holders of stablecoin-adjacent assets and anyone watching the real-world utility narrative should be paying close attention right now.
