While Bitcoin and Ethereum Made Holders Rich, XRP Still Hasn't Crossed Its 2017 High
Seven years later, XRP holders are still waiting to break even from the last bull cycle, while bitcoin and ether investors have seen life-changing gains multiple times over.
That's the brutal reality buried in the latest performance data. Bitcoin has shattered its 2017 peak repeatedly, ether has done the same, and even newer tokens that didn't exist in the last cycle have outpaced XRP on returns. XRP remains stubbornly pinned below a high it set when most crypto traders were still learning what a wallet was.
What's Actually Holding XRP Back
This isn't just bad luck. XRP carries structural baggage that other top tokens don't.
The SEC lawsuit, which dragged on for years before a partial resolution, created a cloud of regulatory uncertainty that scared off institutional capital at exactly the moment institutions were piling into bitcoin and ether. While BlackRock was filing for a bitcoin ETF and Ethereum was processing billions in DeFi volume, XRP was stuck in legal limbo.
Then there's the distribution problem. Ripple Labs holds and periodically releases enormous quantities of XRP into the market. That constant sell pressure acts like a ceiling on price, making sustained breakouts significantly harder to maintain than with assets that have fixed, transparent issuance schedules.
Finally, XRP's core use case, cross-border payments, never scaled the way Ripple promised. The banking partnerships that were supposed to drive explosive demand largely stalled. RippleNet exists, but the actual on-demand liquidity product using XRP hasn't moved the needle enough to justify the token's top-ten market cap position to critics.
The Uncomfortable Math for XRP Holders
If you bought XRP at its 2017 peak, you are still underwater in dollar terms. A bitcoin buyer from that same period is sitting on substantial gains despite every crash in between. An ether buyer from 2017 has seen multiple new all-time highs. The opportunity cost for XRP holders across that timeframe is staggering.
XRP has rallied hard in short windows, and the community remains fiercely loyal. But loyalty doesn't pay bills, and hope is not a strategy in a market that rewards positioning over sentiment.
What to Watch
If XRP is in your portfolio, the honest question to ask right now is whether the next catalyst is real and near-term, or whether you're still waiting on promises from 2017. Watch Ripple's ongoing legal developments, actual XRP utilization data in cross-border flows, and whether any ETF momentum builds around the token. Until XRP breaks and holds above its prior cycle high, history says the burden of proof sits entirely with the bulls.
