While America Sleeps, Italy, Portugal and Singapore Now Control 66.9% of Tokenized US Treasuries

Three foreign nations — Italy, Portugal, and Singapore — now hold nearly two-thirds of all tokenized US Treasury assets on-chain, according to new Chainalysis data, and almost nobody in crypto is talking about it.

That number is not a rounding error. It is a structural shift.

Tokenized US Treasuries were supposed to be a story about bringing American fixed-income yield onto the blockchain. What Chainalysis is now revealing is something far more interesting: foreign investors got there first, moved faster, and are quietly accumulating the dominant positions while domestic adoption crawls.

Why This Actually Matters

When foreigners hold the majority of tokenized US government debt, two things happen simultaneously. First, the US loses a layer of financial soft power. Traditionally, foreign demand for US Treasuries gives Washington leverage. When that demand moves on-chain and concentrates in Europe and Southeast Asia, the dynamics of that relationship shift in ways regulators have not fully priced in.

Second, this signals that institutional appetite for real-world assets on-chain is not a domestic phenomenon waiting to happen. It is already happening, just not where most US-focused crypto traders are looking.

Singapore's presence on this list is especially telling. The city-state has aggressively built regulatory frameworks designed to attract exactly this kind of institutional on-chain activity. MAS, Singapore's financial regulator, has been ahead of the curve on tokenized assets for years. The data is now reflecting that policy advantage in real capital flows.

Italy and Portugal's inclusion is the more surprising angle. Southern European institutional players are not typically at the frontier of crypto adoption narratives. Their dominance here suggests either sovereign-adjacent entities or large private wealth managers moving quietly into tokenized yield products, likely as a hedge against eurozone uncertainty.

The Hidden Angle Crypto Twitter Is Missing

The broader tokenized Treasury market has grown rapidly in 2024, with total value locked across platforms surging past billions in on-chain government debt. Platforms like Ondo Finance, BlackRock's BUIDL fund, and Franklin Templeton's BENJI token have led issuance. But the question of who is actually holding these assets has received almost no attention.

Chainalysis just answered that question, and the answer should make US policymakers uncomfortable.

What Crypto Holders Should Watch

If foreign concentration in tokenized Treasuries continues to grow, expect US regulatory pressure on these products to intensify. Watch for RWA protocol tokens tied to Treasury yield exposure, particularly Ondo Finance's ONDO, to react to any policy signals. More immediately, this data is a green light for the RWA narrative heading into 2025. Foreign institutional validation is exactly the kind of on-chain proof-of-concept that accelerates domestic adoption. Get positioned in the RWA sector before the US catches up.
