The Tokenized Asset Stat Everyone Quotes Is Wrong: Real Utilization Is Nearly 20%

The tokenized asset market looks half-asleep on paper — but that's because almost nobody is reading the data correctly.

Matthew Fisher, co-founder of Katana, has run the numbers and the conclusion is striking: once you account for supply that was never meant to move, adjust for who is actually holding these assets and why, and fold in activity that settles off-contract, real utilization of tokenized assets sits close to 20%. The headline figures the market obsesses over are, in his words, deeply misleading.

What the Raw Numbers Miss

The standard utilization metric divides on-chain transaction volume by total tokenized asset supply. Sounds clean. It isn't.

The problem starts with the denominator. A significant chunk of tokenized supply is held by long-term institutional custodians, sovereign-adjacent entities, and structured product vaults that have no intention of moving assets on a short time horizon. Counting that supply as "idle" is like measuring how often a pension fund day-trades and concluding that equities have no utility.

Then there's the numerator problem. A growing slice of tokenized asset activity settles through bilateral arrangements, off-contract coordination layers, and private ledger integrations that simply do not show up in public on-chain data. These transactions are real. They move real value. They are invisible to the dashboards everyone screenshots.

Fisher's corrected framework strips out supply that was structurally never mobile, segments holders by mandate and time horizon, and adds back verified off-contract settlement flows. The result: utilization climbs from the low single digits that surface-level reads suggest to somewhere near 20%.

Why This Changes the Conversation

The tokenization narrative has been under quiet pressure. Critics point to sluggish on-chain velocity as evidence that real-world asset tokenization is mostly a PowerPoint story — lots of announcements, not much actual use.

If Fisher's methodology holds up, that critique needs serious revision. A 20% utilization rate is not a dormant market. It is a market in early but genuine motion, with institutional rails being built underneath activity that the standard tools cannot yet see.

This also reframes the competitive picture. Protocols and platforms building liquidity infrastructure for tokenized assets may be sitting on more real demand than their own analytics dashboards reflect. That is a mispricing signal worth watching.

What to Watch

If you are positioned in tokenization-adjacent infrastructure — custody layers, settlement protocols, RWA-focused DeFi platforms — the Fisher thesis is a reason to hold conviction while the crowd misreads the metrics.

Watch for institutional players to start citing corrected utilization figures in their own reporting. When that language shift happens, the narrative catches up fast.

The market is not sleeping. The data just has not caught up yet.
