Strategy Spent $100M Defending a Stock Price. DeFi Is Now Selling That Risk Back to You at 7%.

Strategy quietly deployed $100 million to defend the $100 par value of its STRC preferred stock, and a DeFi protocol just turned that fragile support into a packaged yield product for retail traders.

Solstice announced a tranched product built directly on STRC, Strategy's Bitcoin-linked preferred stock. The pitch sounds clean: a senior tranche offering roughly 7% yield that only starts absorbing losses if STRC drops below $47.66. That sounds like a wide cushion until you check the current price.

STRC is trading near $95.31. That means Strategy's preferred stock is already sitting about 4.7% below its $100 par value, and the so-called "safe" loss threshold sits roughly 50% below today's market price. The buffer is real, but the context matters enormously.

Here is the part most people will skip over: Strategy had to spend $100 million just to keep STRC from falling further. That is not a sign of strength. That is a company using capital to artificially support a security that the market is already discounting. When a floor requires active spending to exist, it is not really a floor.

Solstice COO David Plisek framed the senior tranche as a conservative entry point into Bitcoin-correlated yield. And structurally, tranching does distribute risk. Holders of the senior slice are last in line to take losses. That is how collateralized products are supposed to work.

But the underlying collateral here is a preferred stock tied to Bitcoin, issued by a company that holds Bitcoin as its primary treasury asset, and that just spent nine figures propping up the price of that same stock. Every layer of this trade is Bitcoin risk wearing a different outfit.

The 7% yield is also worth interrogating. In a world where U.S. Treasuries offer 4.5% to 5%, a 7% structured yield on a Bitcoin-correlated product is not a gift. It is compensation for complexity, correlation risk, and the very real possibility that the $100M defense of STRC was a one-time move, not a standing commitment.

DeFi packaging institutional stress into retail yield products is not new. But the speed at which Solstice moved to productize STRC risk, while Strategy was still actively managing the price, is a signal worth watching closely.

What to watch: If STRC continues drifting below $95, the pressure on Strategy to deploy more capital grows. Bitcoin holders should treat any sustained weakness in STRC as an early warning on broader MicroStrategy-linked sentiment. And if you are eyeing the Solstice senior tranche for that 7%, make sure you understand exactly whose risk you are being paid to hold.
