SoFi Just Built a Stablecoin That Pays 4.4%: Traditional Finance Will Never Be the Same

A federally insured bank just launched a yield-bearing token that makes USDC and Tether look like checking accounts nobody asked for.

SoFi Bank has introduced SOFIE, a tokenized deposit where every token equals exactly $1 held at SoFi Bank, earning 4.40% APY, fully backed by FDIC insurance. This is not a DeFi protocol with anonymous devs and audit disclaimers buried in a GitHub readme. This is a regulated U.S. bank putting dollars on a blockchain and handing you yield that most savings accounts haven't touched in years.

The Problem It's Solving Is Bigger Than You Think

Every major stablecoin in circulation right now, USDC, Tether, PYUSD, pays holders exactly nothing. The yield from the Treasury bills and money market instruments backing those coins flows straight to the issuers. Circle quietly pocketed over $1.6 billion in revenue in 2024 largely on that spread. You held the dollar risk. They kept the return.

SOFIE flips that model. The depositor earns the yield. The token converts back to a standard stablecoin for on-chain use when needed. You get the blockchain flexibility and the bank-level protection, simultaneously.

Why This Is the Moment TradFi Has Been Building Toward

This is not an experiment. SoFi already holds a national bank charter, something most crypto-native companies have spent years trying to obtain or work around. That charter means SOFIE deposits are insured up to FDIC limits, a guarantee zero algorithmic stablecoins and zero crypto-native issuers can make without a partner bank standing behind them.

The timing is also deliberate. With stablecoin legislation advancing in Washington and regulators demanding clearer frameworks for digital dollars, SoFi has positioned itself ahead of rules that will almost certainly favor chartered institutions over decentralized issuers.

Tokenized deposits from banks are not a new concept. JPMorgan has run its JPM Coin on private rails for years. But SOFIE is consumer-facing, yield-generating, and attached to a brand millions of retail users already trust with their mortgages and investment accounts. That distribution advantage is enormous.

What Crypto Holders Should Watch Right Now

If SOFIE gains traction, it creates direct pressure on USDC and other issuers to share yield with holders or lose ground to regulated bank tokens. Watch whether Circle or Tether responds with any yield-sharing mechanism in the next two quarters.

More importantly, watch which wallets and DeFi protocols move to integrate SOFIE. The moment it plugs into a major DEX or lending protocol, the yield-bearing regulated stablecoin becomes a serious competitor to every idle USDC position sitting in a wallet earning nothing.

The stablecoin war just got a new front, and this time the banks showed up with a charter and 4.40%.
