Only 0.1% of DeFi Has Insurance Coverage. Firelight Just Raised $8M to Change That.
Less than one cent of every dollar locked in DeFi is protected against exploits, bugs, or collapses. Firelight, the Sentora-incubated cover protocol, just raised $8 million to close that gap, and its first live integrations are dropping this month.
The Problem Is Bigger Than Most Traders Realize
DeFi has absorbed billions in hacks, rug pulls, and smart contract failures over the past four years. The industry's response has been mostly silence. On-chain protection protocols exist, but adoption has been almost nonexistent, covering roughly 0.1% of total value locked across the entire sector. That number is not a typo.
For context, traditional finance insures virtually everything. Banks, brokers, custodians, exchanges, all carry layers of protection. DeFi users are largely flying without a net, and most of them don't even know it.
What Firelight Actually Built
Firelight's backstop mechanism is collateralized by staked XRP on the Flare network. The protocol already holds $76 million in staked XRP, giving it real capital to pay out claims rather than relying on governance votes or empty promise pools that tend to evaporate exactly when users need them most.
The Sentora incubation gives Firelight institutional-grade infrastructure from day one, which matters enormously in a space where most cover protocols have failed to gain traction because of thin backstops and complex claim processes.
The $8 million raise funds the build-out of vault integrations, starting with partnerships going live this month. The team is targeting DeFi vaults specifically, which represent concentrated risk pools where a single exploit can wipe out depositors at scale.
Why This Raise Matters Right Now
DeFi TVL has been recovering sharply in 2025. More capital flowing into unprotected vaults means more systemic risk, not less. Firelight is entering this market at exactly the right moment, when yields are attracting fresh capital but memory of past exploits is still fresh enough that vault depositors are asking harder questions about protection.
The XRP collateral angle also opens a new use case for Flare's staking ecosystem, giving XRP holders a productive and purposeful yield outlet beyond generic liquid staking.
What to Watch
Track which vault protocols announce Firelight integrations this month. Those partnerships signal which teams are serious about user protection and could attract more conservative institutional capital fleeing uninsured alternatives. If Firelight gains traction, expect competing cover protocols to scramble for their own raise. The 0.1% coverage stat is about to become a talking point across all of DeFi.
