ETH Just Got Liquidated at 6x Bitcoin's Rate: The $356M Wipeout Nobody Saw Coming

Ether traders were obliterated at six times the rate of bitcoin holders during crypto's $1 billion liquidation flush — and ETH's market cap is less than a fifth the size of BTC's.

That ratio is not a typo. It is a flashing red warning sign about how dangerously overleveraged the ether market had become.

Over a single 24-hour window, approximately $356 million in ETH positions were forcibly closed, according to CoinDesk data. Bitcoin, the largest crypto asset by a factor of five, did not come close to matching that carnage on a proportional basis. When you size the liquidations against market cap, ETH traders were running positions so stretched that even a modest price move turned into a bloodbath.

Why ETH Got Hit Harder

The answer is leverage concentration. ETH has become a playground for higher-risk directional bets, particularly among traders convinced that institutional inflows, ETF momentum, or the next protocol upgrade will send prices surging. That optimism builds up in the futures and perpetuals market as open interest climbs, funding rates stay elevated, and nobody wants to be the one who missed the move.

Then the market breathes the wrong way and the cascade starts.

Liquidations are not random. They feed on themselves. One forced sell triggers the next price drop, which triggers the next liquidation. When leverage is concentrated in a single asset, that loop runs faster and hits harder. ETH's relatively thinner liquidity compared to BTC means the same dollar volume of liquidations moves the price more, which creates more liquidations.

What the $1 Billion Flush Actually Signals

The broader $1 billion wipeout across crypto is not just a bad day. It is the market self-correcting after weeks of aggressive positioning. Traders who loaded up on leveraged longs during the recent rally were essentially daring the market to prove them wrong. The market accepted that dare.

The uncomfortable truth is that the same optimism driving ETH open interest higher is still very much present. Nothing fundamental has changed about the bull case. What has changed is that the weakest hands have now been flushed out, which historically sets up cleaner price action for those who remain.

What to Watch Now

Monitor ETH funding rates across major perpetuals exchanges. If rates snap back to elevated positive territory within 48 hours, leverage is rebuilding too fast and another flush becomes likely. If rates stay neutral or dip negative, the market is healing properly.

For holders, this is not a sell signal. It is a leverage warning. Spot is fine. Margin is not your friend right now.
