Trump-linked crypto projects have quietly drained $4.7 billion from investor pockets, according to a new report from Public Citizen, and most people still aren't connecting the dots.
The nonpartisan watchdog group dropped the analysis this week, cataloguing losses across multiple Trump-branded ventures. The target list includes memecoins, NFT collections, and other digital asset plays tied to the former president and current White House occupant. The number is staggering: $4.7 billion in combined investor losses.
The one exception? World Liberty Financial's USD1 stablecoin. Public Citizen concedes that USD1 holders haven't suffered major losses, at least not yet. But that's a narrow carve-out in an otherwise brutal damage report.
The Pattern Nobody Wants to Say Loudly
This isn't a story about one bad trade. Public Citizen's framing is deliberate: these are "schemes," plural, systematic, and recurring. The report connects a series of launches, hype cycles, and subsequent collapses that follow a recognizable playbook. Token or NFT drops with massive celebrity-driven promotion, retail investors flooding in at the peak, insiders cashing out, and ordinary holders left underwater.
The TRUMP memecoin launch in January is the most visible example. It briefly hit a market cap near $15 billion before collapsing more than 80% from its highs. Retail traders who bought the hype absorbed most of that destruction. The MELANIA token followed the same arc, compressing the damage into an even shorter window.
Add the earlier NFT card series losses, the Truth Social adjacent token speculation, and the broader ecosystem of Trump-adjacent projects that rode the name recognition straight into the ground, and $4.7 billion starts to look like a conservative estimate.
Why USD1 Is the Sleeper Risk Here
Public Citizen's measured tone on USD1 shouldn't be read as a clean bill of health. The stablecoin is young, its reserves are not audited with the same transparency as USDC or USDT, and it sits at the center of an active political conflict of interest debate in Washington. Legislators pushing stablecoin regulation have specifically flagged USD1 as a test case for why ethics guardrails need to be written into any new framework.
If stablecoin legislation passes with loopholes that benefit USD1, the political blowback and potential regulatory reversal could create exactly the kind of instability that stablecoins are supposed to prevent.
What Crypto Holders Should Watch Right Now
Track the stablecoin bill negotiations in the Senate closely. Any language that critics label as "USD1-friendly" will trigger immediate scrutiny and potential market volatility around the broader stablecoin sector. If you are holding any Trump-branded token, the $4.7 billion figure is your exit signal. The pattern is documented now. The next cycle will not look different.
