$126M Profit, But Strip Out Bitcoin's Rally and American Bitcoin Is Bleeding
Remove one line from American Bitcoin's Q3 earnings and the whole story flips from triumph to warning sign.
The Eric Trump-co-founded miner reported $126 million in net profit for Q3 — a number that looks strong until you notice that $197.3 million of it came purely from Bitcoin price appreciation. Strip that out, and the company's actual mining operations ran at a loss. That is not a business printing money. That is a business surviving on BTC's coattails.
The Numbers That Matter
American Bitcoin (ABTC) dropped its earnings after US markets closed on November 4. By that point, the stock had already fallen 5.6% from its prior close — meaning the market had already started doing the math before the official report landed.
The core problem is simple: when Bitcoin pumps, ABTC looks like a machine. When Bitcoin flatlines or drops, the operational cracks show immediately. Q3 had a generous BTC tailwind. Q4 is a different environment.
Why This Is a Red Flag, Not a Victory Lap
Mining companies live and die on two things: the Bitcoin price and their cost to produce each coin. If your production costs exceed your revenue without an asset appreciation boost propping up the books, you are not a profitable miner. You are a leveraged Bitcoin holder wearing a mining company's jersey.
This is not unique to American Bitcoin. The entire sector faces this structural tension. But the Q3 report makes it unusually visible. A $197 million paper gain covering an operational loss is a vulnerability, not a business model.
The timing matters too. Bitcoin's Q4 2025 performance has been less linear than Q3. Volatility has returned, and miners who cannot cover costs through actual block rewards and transaction fees are exposed every time the price stalls.
What Crypto Holders Should Watch
If you hold ABTC stock or are watching it as a Bitcoin proxy play, the key metric for Q4 is not the headline profit number. Watch the operating income line before any unrealized BTC gains are applied. That number will tell you whether the business is working or whether it is just along for the ride.
For Bitcoin holders broadly, this earnings report is a reminder that mining stocks amplify BTC exposure in both directions. When BTC runs, they outperform. When BTC stalls, the operational losses that were always there suddenly become visible.
The rally bailed American Bitcoin out in Q3. Q4 will show whether the company can stand on its own.
