Bitwise Just Called $1.6M Bitcoin by 2036, Even With ETF Inflows Slowing Down
Bitwise is forecasting Bitcoin hits $1.6 million per coin by 2036, and they are not backing down, even as gold absorbs the bulk of store-of-value capital and spot ETF inflows have started to lose steam.
That is not a typo. One point six million dollars.
The firm released updated long-range price targets this week, and the headline number demands attention. At current prices, that projection implies a roughly 15x return from today's levels over the next 12 years. Bitwise is not framing this as a moonshot scenario. They are treating it as a base case, grounded in Bitcoin's continued absorption of global store-of-value demand.
Why Bitwise Is Not Flinching
The argument is structural. Bitcoin does not need to win the store-of-value race outright. It just needs to capture a meaningful slice of a market that includes gold, sovereign bonds, real estate, and other inflation hedges. Gold's market cap sits north of $20 trillion. If Bitcoin pulls even a fraction of that over the next decade, the math on $1.6 million starts to look less insane.
Bitwise acknowledges the near-term headwinds directly. ETF inflows, which exploded in early 2024, have decelerated. Gold has outperformed Bitcoin over several recent stretches, attracting institutional and retail capital that might otherwise have rotated into crypto. Macroeconomic uncertainty is pushing some investors toward the asset with a 5,000-year track record, not the 15-year-old one.
And yet, the firm is holding the target.
The Part Most People Are Missing
The more interesting detail is not the $1.6 million number. It is that Bitwise is publishing long-range conviction calls during a downturn. Institutional research firms do not raise 12-year price targets into brutal markets to generate headlines. They do it when internal models, client positioning, and macro signals give them cover to make a statement.
This is a firm that manages billions signaling to its own clients: do not rotate out.
The slowing ETF inflow narrative has spooked short-term traders. Bitwise appears to be betting that narrative is noise against a decade-long signal.
What Crypto Holders Should Watch
If you are holding Bitcoin through this downturn, this report gives you a framework worth stress-testing. The key variables to monitor are: gold's price trajectory relative to Bitcoin, monthly ETF flow data from issuers like BlackRock and Fidelity, and any shift in sovereign or pension fund allocation toward digital assets.
A reversal in ETF inflows, specifically a return to consistent weekly net positives, would be the clearest early signal that the $1.6 million thesis is back on track.
The target is 12 years out. The signal on whether it is credible could come in the next 12 weeks.
