Bitcoin Has 4 Unpatched Bugs and a 5-Year Quantum Deadline: Miners Are Blocking the Fix
Miner support for BIP-110, Bitcoin's most contested upgrade proposal, sits at just 0.89% entering its final standard voting window — and the clock to a quantum-resistant Bitcoin may already be running out.
On July 25, Bitcoin entered the last ordinary 2,016-block window under BIP-110's activation mechanism. The proposal needs 1,109 blocks (55%) to lock in. With current support barely cracking 1%, that threshold is nowhere in sight. If support stays below the floor, a mandatory version-bit phase can trigger as early as August — turning a quiet governance dispute into a full-blown miner standoff.
This isn't just a technical footnote. Bitcoin developer and security researcher Jameson Lopp has publicly framed what's at stake: the network is sitting on four unpatched protocol bugs, an unresolved covenant debate that would reshape how Bitcoin scripts work, and a quantum computing threat that serious researchers estimate gives the network roughly five years before elliptic curve cryptography becomes a liability.
None of those are fixed. And miners, who control the activation levers, are not moving.
Why Miners Are Stalling
Miner hesitation on upgrades isn't new. The ghost of the 2017 block size war still shapes how mining pools approach governance. Any change that touches consensus rules risks splitting the network, and split networks destroy miner revenue. The incentive to wait, watch, and let someone else blink first is enormous.
But the Consensus Cleanup proposal Lopp is pushing isn't a radical economic overhaul. It's maintenance. Patching known bugs. Laying groundwork for quantum resistance. The kind of work that feels optional until the day it suddenly isn't.
The four unpatched vulnerabilities haven't been exploited at scale yet. That's not the same as saying they're safe.
The Quantum Window Is Narrowing
Five years sounds like a long runway. It isn't. Migrating Bitcoin wallets to quantum-resistant cryptography requires coordinated protocol changes, user action across millions of wallets, and miner consensus. The 2017 SegWit activation took years of political warfare. A quantum migration is orders of magnitude more complex.
If the activation window opens in August without miner buy-in, the governance fight gets louder, slower, and more expensive for everyone holding BTC.
