Banks Have a Secret Weapon Against Stablecoins, and It Costs Almost Nothing

A single basis point, 0.01%, is all it takes to slash stablecoin growth by nearly a fifth, according to a new Bank for International Settlements working paper, and that should make every stablecoin holder pay attention.

The BIS research found a 1 basis point rise in U.S. bank deposit rates predicted a drop in ten-week stablecoin growth from 15% down to 12%. That is a 20% reduction in momentum from a rate move so small most people would never notice it on their savings account statement.

The implication is brutal and simple: banks do not need regulators, crackdowns, or congressional hearings to slow the stablecoin wave. They just need to make sitting in a traditional savings account slightly less painful.

Why This Is Bigger Than It Looks

Stablecoins have been one of crypto's strongest growth stories. Total stablecoin supply has climbed steadily as users park capital on-chain, move money across borders, and earn yield in DeFi protocols. The bull case for stablecoins rests heavily on traditional banking being slow, expensive, and unrewarding for savers.

That bull case just got a quiet but serious challenge.

The BIS paper essentially argues that stablecoin adoption is not purely ideological. A meaningful portion of users are making a rational financial decision: on-chain dollars beat sitting in a bank account earning next to nothing. The moment banks start competing on yield, even marginally, some of that capital stops migrating to stablecoins.

This matters right now because the Federal Reserve's rate cycle is front and center. Rates remain elevated by historical standards. Banks are sitting on the ability to attract depositors if they choose to compete. The fact that most still are not paying competitive deposit rates is almost the only reason this dynamic has not already played out more aggressively.

What Happens When Rates Fall

Here is the flip side that stablecoin bulls will point to immediately: when the Fed cuts rates, bank deposit yields compress. The incentive to stay in traditional savings disappears even further. That tailwind for stablecoin growth could accelerate hard in a falling rate environment, exactly the environment many traders are positioning for heading into late 2025.

The BIS paper cuts both ways. It reveals a vulnerability, but it also maps the upside scenario clearly.

What To Watch

Monitor Fed rate decisions and any shift in how aggressively U.S. retail banks advertise deposit rates. If banks stay passive on yields while the Fed holds, stablecoin growth likely continues. If banks get competitive, expect growth to cool faster than most on-chain analysts are modeling. Stablecoin supply charts and USDC, USDT weekly issuance data are the metrics to track weekly right now.
