AI Agents Are Coming for Circle's Lunch, and Mizuho Just Put a Number on It
Mizuho analysts are warning that artificial intelligence agents could strip Circle of up to 20% of its reserve revenue, and the mechanism is simpler and more dangerous than most people realize.
The threat isn't a hack. It isn't a bank run. It's optimization.
As AI agents become the layer through which more users interact with their finances, those agents will do what they are built to do: find the best yield. And right now, USDC sitting in Circle's reserves is not generating the best yield for holders. Mizuho is flagging a 10-20% medium-term downside risk to Circle's reserve revenue as these agents increasingly route USDC holders toward higher-yielding fiat alternatives without users ever having to think about it.
This is the stablecoin threat nobody was modeling.
Why This Is Bigger Than One Company
Circle's business model depends heavily on the spread between what it earns on reserves, primarily short-term U.S. Treasuries and cash equivalents, and what it pays out to holders. That spread is the engine. If AI agents systematically drain USDC supply by nudging users toward money market funds or yield-bearing alternatives, the engine loses fuel.
And Circle is not alone here. Every non-yield-bearing stablecoin issuer faces the same structural vulnerability. Tether, while more opaque about its reserve mechanics, operates under similar logic. The entire stablecoin business model was built in a world where users were passive. AI agents are not passive.
The Timing Could Not Be Worse
Circle is reportedly preparing for a public listing. A 10-20% revenue haircut flagged by a Wall Street firm right before an IPO is the kind of headline that complicates roadshow conversations. Investors pricing Circle's equity will now have to bake in an AI-driven disintermediation risk that did not exist in any serious form two years ago.
Mizuho is not predicting collapse. It is predicting margin compression from a source that is structural and growing. That is arguably harder to defend against than a one-time crisis.
What to Watch
If you hold USDC or have exposure to Circle's business trajectory, the number to track is USDC supply growth versus the expansion of yield-bearing stablecoin alternatives like USDY or sDAI. If AI agent adoption accelerates and yield-bearing options scale, the rotation will show up in on-chain supply data before it shows up in any earnings report.
The smart money is already asking whether the next generation of stablecoins needs to share yield to survive. Circle's answer to that question will define its next decade.
